National Hockey League

All-Star Game

NHL All-Star Game - As the NHL is participating in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, there will be no All-Star game in the 2009-10 season.

National Broadcasters

Canada (English)

CBC - In 2009-10, the second year of a 6-year deal with the NHL, CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada" broadcasts Saturday doubleheaders starting at 7 PM Eastern time, with the "Scotiabank Saturday Night" pre-game show, with Ron MacLean and Don Cherry, at 6:30 PM ET. In addition, they will air selected weeknight games. The "national" (Toronto) 7 PM games are generally called by Jim Hughson and Craig Simpson, with Bob Cole and Greg Millen doing the regional (Montreal) game, and Dean Brown and Gary Galley doing the other regional (Ottawa) game.  Mark Lee and Kevin Weekes do the 10 PM game.  CBC plans to air every Montreal Canadiens Saturday night game to Quebec and other Francophone regions.  CBC also has the All-Star Game, extensive Stanley Cup Playoff coverage, and exclusive Canadian coverage of the Stanley Cup Finals. "Tim Horton's Hockey Day in Canada 2010" is Saturday, January 30 with Montreal at Ottawa (2:00 PM), Vancouver at Toronto (7:00 PM), and Edmonton at Calgary (10:00 PM).

TSN/TSN2 - In 2009-10, the second year of a 6-year deal with the NHL, TSN has rights to a 122-game national package featuring national exclusivity on Wednesday nights plus early-round Stanley Cup Playoff coverage.  70 of the 87 TSN games will include at least one Canadian team. In addition, they'll have exclusive southern-Ontario coverage of selected Maple Leafs games.  35 TSN2 games will feature non-Canadian teams. One of TSN's first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series can feature a Canadian team.  CBC and TSN swapped Stanley Cup Playoff games in 2009 when needed for scheduling purposes, and may do so again in 2010.

NHL Network - The network, a digital-tier network, carries 30 live games across Canada.  For 2009-10, these are reportedly simulcasts of the games from US-based regional sports networks.

Canada (French)

RDS - TSN's French-language arm is the national broadcaster of the full schedule for the Montreal Canadiens, with exclusivity in Quebec. Pierre Houde and Benoit Hogue call the action. RDS also carries a selection of other NHL games, including 15 Ottawa Senators games and the Winter Classic. They'll carry as much of the Stanley Cup Playoffs as they can.

Reseau Info-Sports -- RDS's second network carries 42 games.

United States

NBC - 2009-10 turns out to be the 2nd year of the second 3-year deal between the NHL and NBC (both the NBC and Versus deals expire after 2010-11).  The network will carry a flexible schedule of mid-to-late-season Sunday "Game of the Week" broadcasts. It will start with the annual NHL Winter Classic outdoor game, to be played at Boston's Fenway Park on January 1, 2010.  Several games are made available, with NBC picking one and returning the rest to local broadcasters (and moving those games to evening time slots, with the decision coming 13 days before game time). They'll also have Stanley Cup Playoff coverage: weekend playoff games and prime-time coverage of games 1-2 and 5-7 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. Mike Emrick and Ed Olczyk are lead announcers for NBC coverage. There will be no studio show,  with Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury doing pre-game and intermission shows from the site of the Game of the Week.  NBC is the official USA broadcaster of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and is expected to feature the ice hockey tournament.

NBC dates in 2010: Friday, Jan. 1 (confirmed, Philadelphia at Boston, Fenway Park); Jan. 17 (CHI-DET, PHI-WSH); Jan. 24 (PIT-PHI; BOS-CAR); Jan. 31 (DET-PIT, TB-WSH); Feb. 7 (BOS-MTL, PIT-WSH); Mar. 7 (BOS-PIT; DET-CHI; CAR-ATL); Mar. 14 (COL-DAL, PHI-NYR, PIT-TB; WSH-CHI); Mar. 21 (NYR-BOS, BUF-CAR); Apr. 4 (Detroit at Philadelphia); Apr. 11 (BOS-WSH, DET-CHI, NYR-PHI).  Puck the Media predicted games are in bold.  Actual games are announced 13 days in advance.

Versus - Comcast's Versus is the NHL's cable partner, under a deal through 2010-11. They'll carry a 54-game regular-season package.  Monday games are non-exclusive.  Most Tuesday night games are exclusive (US teams can't air their games locally during Versus' window). They'll also have extensive Stanley Cup Playoff coverage and games 3-4 of the Stanley Cup Finals.  Versus' lead announcer is Mike Emrick, and the network leans heavily on corporate parent Comcast's lineup of announcers.

NHL Network - The US version of Canada's NHL Network, supported by Comcast as part of the Versus deal, is available on digital cable tiers across the US. The network carries a mix of games from Hockey Night In Canada, TSN Wednesday Night Hockey, some NHL Network Canada productions, and local broadcasts.  The network is planning to air 78 games in 2009-10.

Satellite/Digital Cable

NHL Centre Ice - A subscription package, showing all out-of-market games including CBC and Rogers SportsNet coverage, to American viewers with the DirecTV satellite system or many digital cable systems.

SiriusXM Satellite Radio - The NHL is on both services of SiriusXM Radio.  On XM, the NHL's home service, NHL Home Ice is on XM 204, and game coverage is on XM 204-209 and 241-242.  Sirius Best of XM subscribers get NHL Home Ice on Sirius 208, and games on Sirius 208-220.
